BRODA® PRO-TEK-TOR™ SLT – Lions

BRODA ® PRO-TEK-TOR™ SLT is a natural oil wood finish that is water-borne. This provides the best of both worlds – the durability of oil with low-VOC and easy cleanup.  Oxide and trans oxide pigments – very finely ground colours – suspended in linseed oil, tung oil and water. This combination penetrates easily, even into wood that is damp or ‘green’. The water opens the spaces between the cells of the wood, drawing in the oils and protective pigments. The addition of UV blockers and anti-mildew ingredients makes this family of coatings ideal for outdoor applications. When used indoors, PRO-TEK-TOR™ is equally effective, with no harsh solvent fumes and a rich, colourful finish you’ll appreciate for years to come.

Where To Use It
Use on vertical and protected wood surfaces. Enhances the natural beauty of wood and imparts an oiled appearance. When applied correctly will not peel, crack or blister. Very easy to maintain. Can be applied on dry or unseasoned wood with up to a 30% moisture level.
Coverage: Rough surfaces: 150 – 300 sq. ft. / gallon / coat. Sanded, smooth surfaces: 250 – 400 sq. ft. / gallon / coat. Coverage will depend on wood species, texture and/or porosity.

Tools & Equipment You Will Need
Brush: Use a natural bristle brush (ie. Corona Oil-Stain-It) or an applicator pad. No reduction is necessary.
Roller: Use a 10mm – 20mm roller cover.
Spray-Airless: Pressure: 2000 psi Tip: .013 — .015
Spray-HVLP: Tip: Standard needle
Depending on the job, a power washer, a grinder and a good quality sander may also be required. Tape, tarps, trays and some rags will always come in handy.

Preparing The Surface for BRODA® Coatings
Remove all existing paints, coatings, mildew, wax, oil, dirt and deteriorated substrate. (Replace all deteriorated substrate as required)
Rough Wood Surfaces: Powerwash at 500 psi.
Smooth Wood Surfaces: Sand to 80 grit.
New wood: Remove all mill glaze. (the glossy surface on planed or new lumber surfaces)
Pressure Treated Wood: Test the absorbency of the wood by sprinkling water on the surface. If the water penetrates the wood quickly, the wood is ready to finish. If the water beads up or does not penetrate, allow the wood to weather and test for absorbency again. Do not sand pressure-treated lumber. Due to the green or brown tone of many brands of pressure-treated lumber, the colour of the BRODA ® PRO-TEK-TOR SLT may look different from the colour selected. Always test for colour and appearance in an inconspicuous area.
Previously Stained Wood: BRODA ® PRO-TEK-TOR SLT may be applied over existing well-weathered semi-transparent stains, however, the colour of the existing stain may be visible through this finish. Remove all surface contamination by sanding, power washing or with a wood cleaning/restoration product.
Removing Mildew: If after cleaning, the surface appears dirty, suspect mildew. Remove mildew before painting with a solution of 1 pint bleach and 1 gallon water. Apply the solution and scrub the area. Allow the bleach solution to remain on the surface for 10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with water until there is no bleach odour. Apply diluted acid-based wood cleaner to neutralize the bleach. Rinse well until sudsing no longer persists. Wear protective eyewear, rubber gloves, and protective clothing. Quickly wash off any of the cleaning solutions which come in contact with your skin. Do not add detergents or ammonia to the bleach/water solution. Apply appropriate patching and filling materials to cracks, nail holes and other surface imperfections. Filled areas may take BRODA ® PRO-TEK-TOR SLT differently than bare wood. Do not get caulk or primer on areas to receive BRODA ® PRO-TEK-TOR SLT. (BRODA ® PRO-TEK-TOR SLT will appear different over caulk or primer.) Optimum wood surface pH is slightly alkaline.

Mixing BRODA® PRO-TEK-TOR SLT
Applying BRODA® PRO-TEK-TOR SLT is easy, but you want to make sure it’s well mixed first. Open the can and use a stir stick to loosen up the pigment. Pour into another container and scrape any remaining pigment off the bottom of the original container.
Keep mixing back and forth until you’re sure you’ve got all of the pigment mixed in. Intermix the same colours from the same job together.

Applying BRODA® PRO-TEK-TOR SLT
Apply 1st coat of Broda SLT as a heavy coat and work into the wood surface until recommended coverage is achieved. Spread any puddles or runs.
If the wood surface is warm to the touch, dilute Broda SLT up to 10% with cold water or dampen the wood surface before application.
Apply 2nd coat of Broda SLT after the first coat has dried for the recoat period recommended above. Fully saturate the wood surface and achieve the recommended coverage. Spread any puddles and runs. Apply the third coat of Broda SLT after the 2nd coat has dried for the recoat period recommended above. Apply as an even application. Spread any puddles or runs.
Important: Do not apply in direct sunlight. Apply from bottom to top of the project. Apply up and down on vertical siding and posts.
Apply side to side on horizontal siding and logs.
Drying Time @ 50% Relative Humidity:
Touch: @5C: 8 hours @12C: 5 hours @20C: 2 hours
Recoat: @5C: 48 hours @12C: 24 hours @20C: 12 hours
Temperature and humidity dependent. Air and surface temperature should not drop below 1C for 48 hours after application.
Coats: 2 coats of tinted SLT followed by 1 coat of SLT or SLT+ Clear UV Top Coat are necessary to achieve the selected colour.

Cleaning Up with BRODA® Coatings
Clean spills and spatters immediately with soap and warm water. Clean hands and tools immediately after use with soap and warm water. After cleaning, flush spray equipment with mineral spirits to prevent rusting of the equipment if recommended by the manufacturer. Follow manufacturer’s safety recommendations when using mineral spirits. If you’ve been staining all day, it’s probably a good idea to clean yourself up, too. Again, soap and water are best. Now that you’re all done, time to relax, West-Coast BRODA® Style!

CAUTIONS:
Do not use on roofs. Do not apply at temperatures below 1C. Not for use on exposed horizontal surfaces where water may collect. Use Broda Pro-Tek-Tor Deck – Rail Natural Oil Wood Finish for decks, fences, railings, etc.
Water-based or water-borne coatings react with metal. All metal contamination and staining must be removed before applying Broda. After the application of Broda, avoid contact with metal. Treating wood with CBR Iron Shield before applying Broda reduces staining due to metal contamination.

LABEL CAUTIONS:
Use only in well-ventilated conditions. Always wear respiratory protection (NIOSH approved). If you experience headaches or dizziness, increase fresh air or leave the area. Do not take it internally. May irritate eyes. Do not get in eyes. May irritate the skin. Do not get on skin or clothing. Wash hands after using. Keep the container closed when not in use. Do not transfer contents to other containers for storage.

FIRST AID TREATMENT:
If in eyes, rinse with water for 15 minutes. If on the skin, rinse well with water. If swallowed, call a Poison Control Centre or doctor immediately. Do not induce vomiting.
